What is Pinterest’s business value?

Follow Me on PinterestSocial e-commerce marketplaces & communities are on the rise. Picture sharing websites like Pinterest are turning into great referral sources for sales, and better connecting with customers.

What is Pinterest’s business value?

  • Viral product image sharing
  • customer likes & dislikes
  • Exposure to customer’s social network
  • Referral traffic

People create an account by connecting with Facebook. 1st you create pin boards with images from websites based on your interests. Below are a few of the top pins I have observed using Pinterest.

  • Travel Destinations
  • Weddings
  • Food recipes
  • Home decor
  • Crafts

Several companies are creating beautiful images of products, design ideas, and more which then are re-pinned by fans of your images. This creates a social sharing of linked images to your products and services.

As traffic and members increase at websites like Pinterest more companies may be able to better monetize these great online communities. I came across a thought provoking website that challenges the websites advertising value based on it’s stated 12M unique visitors and high amount of referral traffic (Pinterest’s Traffic Data Reveals Its Biggest Weakness on Business Insider April 30, 2012 by Jim Edwards).

What are your thoughts on the business value of Pinterest & other social communities?
